So the local hobby shop gets free kits sometimes and they ask me to use them for new store terrain. In case you have learned by now, I dont like keeping kits whole for 2 reasons:
#1 because I feel like thats how you will mostly encounter kits, whole, painted just like you see on the box.
#2 Plastic kits often dont go easily together how the instructions say they should.
#3 I prefer to base my terrain. I use MDF type board, and bevel the edges.
